About Brooklyn Maqam
Brooklyn Maqam is dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and supporting new community-rooted Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) musical traditions by uniting both established and emerging musicians, music learners, and audiences through affordable and high-quality concerts, informal jams, workshops, classes and innovative musical projects.
Each year, Brooklyn Maqam serves hundreds of artists and reaches thousands of listeners, presenting over 40 concerts and 25 workshops and classes annually. Our work is important for preserving the vitality and longevity of the SWANA musical traditions (particularly with orally transmitted music traditions) and providing access via affordable programming, invaluable opportunities for musical learning and mentorship, innovative music collaborations, and a platform for less-established artists.
Founded in 2018, Brooklyn Maqam quickly emerged as an essential and unique force as one of the only organizations dedicated to preserving and promoting SWANA musical traditions in the New York City area. With an emphasis on local development of community and artistry, we work to bring together people who love this music, and strive to build a community welcoming to people of all backgrounds, musicians and listeners alike.
Brooklyn Maqam is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
